Lake Nakuru is among Kenya’s finest national parks. Flanked by rocky escarpments, pockets of acacia forest and at least one waterfall, the park is gorgeous year-round and is home to both black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos and endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. Rising water levels in 2014 forced the park’s famous flamingos to flee (although a small number had returned at the time of research), and the lake is now hauntingly surrounded by drowned trees.
Day 1: Nairobi – Lake Nakuru National Park
Drive via the Great Rift Valley escarpment, experiencing breathtaking views of the world’s greatest land rift, to arrive in time for lunch. Enjoy an afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park. The park provides a sanctuary for the rhino. Lake Nakuru has always been considered a flamingo lake paradise. The contrast and apparent dislocation between the shallow soda lake with its primeval birds and the animated woods all around it give Lake Nakuru National Park a very distinctive appeal. Plenty of animals; all the big five except Elephant can be spotted. Dinner and overnight at a lodge overlooking the lake.
Day 2: Lake Nakuru National Park – Nairobi
Depart after breakfast to arrive in Nairobi in the early afternoon.
